The Upper Krishna Project consists of construction of two dams across the river Krishna and a network of canals. The main storage is at Almatti Dam, a few kilometers downstream of the confluence of Ghataprabha River and Krishna river. A lower dam, Narayanpur Dam, situated at Narayanpur a few Kms downstream of the confluence of Malaprabha river and Krishna river, will serve as a diversion dam. The Project is planned to be implemented in different stages and phases. Stage-I of the project plans to utilise 119 TMC of water to irrigate 4,25,000 hectares of lands on the left bank of the river. In Stage-II 54 TMC of water will be utilised, to irrigate 1,97,120 Ha. of lands partly by flow on right bank and partly by lifting to higher levels on the left and right bank.

Upper Krishna Project Stage-II is a multi purpose project to utilise 54 TMC of water and to irrigate 1.97 Lakh Ha. of land and generate 672 Million units of energy per year. The projects included in Stage-II are as follows.

  1. On completion, the project will irrigate 6.22 Lakh hectares of lands in the districts of Gulbarga, Raichur, Bagalkot & Bijapur.
  2. A hydel-power generation plant of installed capacity of 297 MW has been contemplated at Almatti. It is estimated to generate about 672 million units annually.This work has been assigned to KPCL, a Karnataka Government Company.
  3. About 530 Kms length of new village and link roads will be constructed, while improvements to about 70 Kms of existing roads will be done.
  4. Increased production of food-grains and cash crops in the command area of the UKP is expected to add an annual income of about Rs.6000 Crores to the Country’s economy. It will usher in alround prosperity and growth to the otherwise draught-prone and poverty sticken districts of the north eastern part of Karnataka.
  5. The project envisages to provide drinking water to 18 urban and hundreds of rural centres.
