K.B.J.N.L Forest Division Almatti
Forest Division is looking after catchment area treatment of Almatti & Narayanapur Reservoir along with soft landscape works on either side of the Almatti Dam and Garden work at Naranyanpur Dam.
a. Afforestation in Catchment Area Treatment
The Forest Division in KBJNL wing is taking Catchment Area Treatment as per the guidelines of MOEF. The main objectives are as below,
- To prevent soil erosion in the catchment area of the reservoir and accumulation of silt in the reservoir by adopting appropriate soil and water conservation structures & afforestation measures.
- To meet the ever increasing demand for fuel, fodder, green manure and small timber by the local population which is mainly dependent on agriculture.
- To raise vegetation which will serve as a shelter belt and minimize soil erosion.
- To provide employment to the local population through afforestation in the catchment area.
- To improve socio-economic condition of the people in the vicinity.
- To encourage the local people to raise trees in the private lands through distribution of seedling.
- To improve the agro climatic condition and rainfall condition of the region.
MOEF has put certain conditions while giving approval to UKP Stage I & II projects reports,regarding Catchment Area Treatment to prevent erosion of soil from the catchment area and to make green along the periphery area & to take plantations in all R.C. Centers, Road side, canal side, Forest block area of the reservoirs as per the M.O.E.F Order No.
- J-12011/41/86-IA date 5-4-1989,
- J-12011/31/96-IA-I dated 8-7-2000 and
- J-12011/31/96-IA-I dated 4-10-2000
Under Stage-I Phase-II, Stage-I Phase-III and Stage-II, and progress has been achieved up to 29-2-2012 is as bellow.

Balance area of 240.00 Ha Forestry works is under progress and planting will be done during 2012 rains.
b. Landscape Works
Almatti Dam is constructed across river Krishna at Almatti, between village Almatti of Basavana Bagewadi taluk and Sitimani village of Bagalkot taluk. Almatti dam is one of the major multi - purpose projects in India and has been considered as a Dam of National Importance.
Krishna Bhagya Jala Nigam has launched an ambitious plan to develop the land adjoining the Dam site as a major recreational center capitalizing on the beautiful resources of water in the reservoir and its surroundings. A number of development works viz., construction of historic Moghul, Italian and French gardens, Musical Dancing Fountain, Boating at silver lake, etc., have already been initiated.

1. 77 ACRES AND FORMAL GARDENS
The 77 acres of landscape development is under taken in the area just abutting to D/s of earthen embankment (left side) of Almatti Dam on one side and approach road which connects NH-13 of Dam Circle and other side is the river course. This area of development has a curvilinear 6 mt wide motorable service road which starts from Entrance Plaza and connects all historical gardens which in turn connects to future development in further area.
Landscaping in 77 acres of land consists of 4 World Heritage Gardens viz.,
a) Moghal Garden : 25 acres including lawn development
b) Italian Earlier Style : 05 acres including lawn development
c) Italian Later Style : 05 acres.
d) French Garden : 08 acres.
e) Rose Garden : 01 acre.
1.a Moghal Garden:
The features of Moghul garden are 7 Nos. of square terraces at different elevations connected by steps and sloping lawns in between. The water channels and fountains are taken in a rectangular grid iron system in each terrace and difference in elevation of each terrace is negotiated by cascades.
The entrance of the Moghul garden takes from a service road at an elevation of 524.00 mt. from there it is connected by the steps and entrance pavilion. The entrance structure has columnar and arched structure and semicircular cascade on the garden side flanked by the steps.
1.b Italian Earlier Style Garden:
This garden is connected by pathways with avenue trees on either side, from 7th terrace of Moghul garden. Italian earlier style is having structures like entrance pavilion, portals and rotunda of Italian architecture. The garden is characterized by the fountains/cascades, mainly avenue of 100 fountains. This garden is also having a dragon fountain with a proposed statute of Italian god or goddess. Another feature of this garden is having fishponds in the middle of the garden aligned perpendicular to central axis. The soft landscape proposed in this garden is more of hedge nature and Mexican lawn in between.

1.c Italian Later Style Garden:
As the name indicates, it is an improved version of Italian earlier style. Here also the structures coming are of Italian architecture. This garden is connected by Italian earlier garden. At the entrance, there is a pond with two structures on either side called 'logia' buildings. Other features of this garden are, free standing Doric columns, fish rill, fountains and casino buildings. The soft landscapes proposed in this area are same as in the Italian earlier style garden.
1.d French Garden:
This garden is ornamental hedge/garden with a high raise building in the back drop. This is connected by the Entrance Plaza and this is having radial path ways and water channels.
2. ROCK GARDEN
Day by day the publicity of Rock Garden is increasing. So many sectors are created in the Rock Garden like silver lake area, Children Sector, Reptile Sector Dinosaurs Sector, fair and picnic scene, Animal Sector, Bird Sector, Tribal Sector, Monkey Sector, Butterfly Sector, Sun rays sector etc. In the Rock Garden already lawn hedge, ground cover, flower bed, shrub planting, herb planting, tree planting have been created. Also, some additional area is taken up for raising of lawn, hedge and shrub planting and formation of paths so as to spread the visitors in the rock garden wherever they want to enjoy freely.
3. GOPAL KRISHNA PARK
The Krishna park is created just opposite to ARBC jack well. The location of this park has its own scenic beauty. Hence, the area was chosen for development of garden. Because of Krishna river, Lord Krishna is taken as a theme. The pranks, mischief and cleverness are depicted artistically which is attracting the thousands of tourist.
Here the area covered is 3 acres, In this garden almost complete area is covered with lawn, hedges, flowerbeds, ground cover , shrubs and trees. Along with this gardening works, Sculptures of Yashoda Krishna, Gopal Krishna, Rasleela of Krishna ,Shanka and Chakra, Krishna Gopika’ s scenes are created and decorated artistically. Even the compound wall gate is decorated artistically related to Krishna and nature.
This marvelous and beautiful garden is attracting thousands of visitors. To make this garden more attractive surrounding areas like In front of ARBC headwork, around canteen area and along the aqueduct, fruit orchards and survey no.22 are developed with lawn, hedges, ground cover, flower beds and ornamental shrubs and fruit yielding hybrid varieties of mango, chikoo, guava, mandarin and jackfruit, custard apple, wood apple, rose apple etc are planted.
To maintain the glory of this garden regular care is taken to maintain those Sculptures with painting and minor repairs.
In front of sita mata temple in the sitimani hillock two ponds are there. People have belief that, those ponds never dry up and always have water so people call them Lava Kush kunda. Based on this kunda’s and to enhance the beauty of Krishna garden and sitimani hillock Lava -Kush garden has been designed and is under implementation. This garden is being developing mainly to attract the children by viewing different childhood activities of Lava and Kush like playing in cradle with their mother Sita, taking education with their Gurus and learning bill and bow education from their Guru Ashvamedhayaga of Rama. Another four sectors are made to depict war scenes between Lava-Kush’s and Shatrughna , vanar sena and Rama. One more sector is constructed to highlight the war scenes between Lav-Kush and Shatrughna , Rama and vanar sena in the cut out murals are depicted in the cave. All sculptures are made by using cement and steel. Natural pavement has been done along the paths and two waterfalls, water channels have been created and two pergolas are constructed. Remaining areas have been developed with lawn, hedges, flower beds, ground cover and ornamental shrubs and shade bearing and ornamental plants.
This garden has view point of sunset and panoramic view of Almatti dam. This will make the garden very popular to public.
